June Good Dinner: Truffles, 6/28

June's dinner took place at Truffles in Ladue. Wait, is this Déjà vu? No - it just so happened we got to eat at Truffles last June too (see last year's post here)! This time around Michelle was the host. I was very sad to miss this dinner, as last year's visit was incredible, however I am also very sad to report the restaurant has apparently taken a nose-dive. Last year everyone including myself raved over this Ladue hidden treasure, and it received the first 5 out of 5 spoons ever from yours truly. What has changed? Well firstly the menu has been significantly altered, making the selection more like that of a steakhouse rather than a fine dining establishment. Most gave the food 4 out of 5 spoons, so there is still some quality worth noting, but no fives were given out, probably because GDCers were expecting the same wow-ing experience they had last time. Another significant change seemed to be quality of service. Every member of the wait staff was excellent last year, but this time around most were disappointed in the server appointed to the GDC table. I do give a shout out to Duke the bartender who someone met during a pre-dinner drink in the bar and said he was excellent. Way to go Duke! You may give us some hope after all. The restaurant's atmosphere was decent and diners did appreciate the nice big round table which made for ease of conversation among the group. Overall, we're mourning a loss, Truffles. What happened? I'll give Truffles three out of five stars. What do you think? Rate & review below!

  1. The food was good but very heavy and almost greasy at times. Despite all of the cheesy choices I made, the barbeque shrimp was my favorite of the night. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will prefer this version of Truffles over the previous but the delicate, fine dining we had last year at this restaurant is missed.

  2. I thought it was overpriced for food that was ok, but not great.

  3. The menu change is significant. The food was taty but certainly it is a heavier meal than the previous menu. It has become more of a steak house whereas previously is was a menu of delicate and delicious, well-prepared food. I really prefer more clear and less cutesy markings for the restrooms. I loved our table, we were able to easily talk and hear one another even though we were a fairly large party.

  4. crab cake was delicious. bbq shrimp had great flavor, but was overcooked. mac & cheese was good. Nice space and we sat near Ms. Piggy. The service was a downer. The food was good.

  5. I arrived early and had a drink in the bar before dinner. The bartender Duke was excellent. He made sure he introduced himself to everyone in the bar. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. On the other hand, our server at dinner was lukewarm. However, he did slightly improve by the end of dinner. I ordered the trout with a side of mac and cheese. The trout was very flavorful and the portion size was generous. The mac and cheese was fantastic. Truffles should really highlight that the cheeses are gruyere and white cheddar. We had a party of seven for dinner. The large round table where we were seated was great for conversation--much better than traditional seating.

  6. General attitude of waiter was less than accommodating of fairly simple requests (like separate checks. A little pricey but good.

  8. Wedge salad was great! Came with crab, dressing was slightly spicy, excellent. But the burger was on a bun that fell apart before I even got it to my mouth and the meat was really under seasoned to the point of being unseasoned.
